Cuthbert was inspired by a vision of lights in the sky one night, which he interpreted as a soul being borne to heaven; it was St. Aidan who died that night, and Cuthbert joined his monastery. Later he too became a missionary and bishop.

THE LESSON
Mark 15:1-11 (NRSV)
As soon as it was morning, the chief priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes and the whole council. They bound Jesus, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate. Pilate asked him, “Are you the King of the Jews?” He answered him, “You say so.” Then the chief priests accused him of many things. Pilate asked him again, “Have you no answer? See how many charges they bring against you.” But Jesus made no further reply, so that Pilate was amazed.
Now at the festival he used to release a prisoner for them, anyone for whom they asked. Now a man called Barabbas was in prison with the rebels who had committed murder during the insurrection. So the crowd came and began to ask Pilate to do for them according to his custom. Then he answered them, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” For he realized that it was out of jealousy that the chief priests had handed him over. But the chief priests stirred up the crowd to have him release Barabbas for them instead.

Everliving God, you called your servants Aidan and Cuthbert to proclaim the Gospel in northern England and gave them loving hearts and gentle spirits: Grant us grace to live as they did, in simplicity, humility and love for the poor; through Jesus Christ, who came among us as one who serves, and who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
A Collect for Protection
O God, the life of all who live, the light of the faithful, the strength of those who labor, and the repose of the dead: We thank you for the blessings of the day that is past, and humbly ask for your protection through the coming night. Bring us in safety to the morning hours; through him who died and rose again for us, your Son our Savior Jesus Christ. Amen.
For the Animals

Dear God, thank you for the animals we love; for what they teach us about ourselves and your marvelous creation. Give us wonder in the smallest things and joy in all your mighty acts. Help us to be stewards of your earth rather than subduers; make us humble on our patch of ground instead of prideful conquerors. Guide us in responsibility for the little ones of life, and let us laugh at all our follies; we are but lambs to the Good Shepherd your Son, who reigns with you, the Maker of our bodies, and your Holy Spirit, the shaper of our souls, one God, feeding us every day. Thank you, God, for all your creatures. Amen.
Prayer for Mission
O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
