Pellegrino: Circumcision. The procedure is the key element of a Jewish male's identity; without it, he doesn't have an identity. He receives his name at this ritual. In Jesus's case he was named for the one who took the People into the Promised Land.

Luke 1:68-79
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel; *

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
