Morning Prayer 14 June 2012: Basil the Great, Bishop of Caesarea, 379

Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to see the sun.

Basil maintained that both Scripture and faith require that the same honor, glory and worship be paid to the Holy Spirit as to the Father and the Son. (We still don’t really do that, but it’s a matter of settled doctrine now, as the Nicene Creed affirms.)

Send our your light and your truth, that they may lead me, and bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling. Psalm 43:3

O God, let our mouth proclaim your praise.
And your glory all the day long.

Praise to the holy and undivided Trinity, one God: *

Ecclesiastes 11:1-8 (NRSV)

Send out your bread upon the waters,
for after many days you will get it back.
Divide your means seven ways, or even eight,
for you do not know what disaster may happen on earth.
When clouds are full,
they empty rain on the earth;
whether a tree falls to the south or to the north,
in the place where the tree falls, there it will lie.
Whoever observes the wind will not sow;
and whoever regards the clouds will not reap.

Just as you do not know how the breath comes to the bones in the mother’s womb, so you do not know the work of God, who makes everything.

Live by the Spirit, I say, and do not gratify the desires of the flesh. For what the flesh desires is opposed to the Spirit, and what the Spirit desires is opposed to the flesh; for these are opposed to each other, to prevent you from doing what you want. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not subject to the law. Now the works of the flesh are obvious: fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, anger, quarrels, dissensions, factions, envy, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these. I am warning you, as I warned you before: those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,

I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only son, our Lord,

THE PRAYERS

Our Father in heaven,

Basil is also the father of Eastern monasticism. Inspired by his sister Macrina, who founded the first monastery for women, he went to Egypt to study the anchorites or solitary monks, then returned to Cappadocia and founded the first monastery for men. With Gregory of Nazianzus, he compiled the “Longer and Shorter Rules,” transforming the anchorite movement into disciplined communities.

Almighty God, you have revealed to your Church your eternal Being of glorious majesty and perfect love as one God in Trinity of Persons: Give us grace that, like your bishop Basil of Caesarea, we may continue steadfast in the confession of this faith, and constant in our worship of you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; who live and reign for ever and ever. Amen.
