There are not many saints about whom we can say, “She touched my life directly,” but we can say that of Florence Nightingale. Her chief works were these: Cutting the British death toll in the Crimean War by proving a link between sanitation and mortality; organizing a professional nursing school in London, which turned nursing from a suspicious pursuit into a profession; and authoring a classic textbook used for decades. Her influence was worldwide, from India to Europe and the Americas; her faith was unwavering. (illustrator unknown)
