Ignatius was martyred by being thrown to the lions in Rome. But he's more remembered today for his incarnationalsim, his insistence that Jesus Christ was a human being like we are. He opposed Gnosticism, which denied the humanity of Christ, and maintained that Church unity springs from the Baptismal covenant. He exhorted, "Try to gather more frequently to celebrate God's Eucharist and to praise him… Heed the bishop and the presbytery attentively and break one loaf, which is the medicine of immortality."

Ignatius was fed to the lions in the arena at Rome to terrify the population in Syria. But on the way to Rome he met with churches in every town, teaching and encouraging; to others he sent letters, of which seven still exist.
