Alfred was king during the Viking invasions of England, which he successfully resisted. After a decisive battle at Edington in 878, he persuaded his foe to accept baptism. Alfred studied the Scriptures in his effort to reform the justice system, instituting trial by jury, and encouraged the translation of books into English to further the cause of education.
