Cross-eyed George Whitefield’s powerful preaching sparked the Great Awakening in 1740. He preached to thousands (and employed a rudimentary publicity team of advance men armed with handbills) in the American colonies, riding from New York to Charleston on horseback, almost 800 miles. He owned slaves on a plantation in Georgia and justified it by quoting the Scriptures.
