Jewish men tie phylacteries or tfillin around their heads and their arms, opposite the heart, during morning prayers. These boxes contain copies of four Torah quotations commanding their use. The intent is to keep God’s word nearest one’s mind and heart. Women never wear phylacteries because, the theory goes, women “always” have God on their minds and hearts.
