Aidan Hart: St. David. When the pagan Angles, Saxons and Jutes successfully invaded Britain in the 5th century, there was one place they didn’t conquer: Wales, where Christianity lived on. David had founded a monastery at Menevia and become its abbot; despite his wishes he was eventually elected bishop, then Primate of Wales. His hometown, still a see city, is now called Ty-Dewi, the House of David.
