John Rising, 1790: William Wilberforce, Age 29. Wilberforce is known worldwide for his dogged persistence in Parliament to ban the slave trade; wealthy, powerful forces were arrayed against him. There was a lot of money to be made in buying and selling human beings; even political moderates with some sympathy toward abolition thought twice about prohibiting the trade, but Wilberforce didn’t take no for an answer.
