Giovanni Battista Tiepolo: St. Clement Adoring the Trinity. Clement was the third pope, whose letter to the Church in Corinth first described the clergy and people as forming a hierarchy, by which the authority of the bishops and presbyters had to be respected. Young leaders in Corinth tried to oust the older ones, but the bishop put a stop to it.
