Morning Prayer 20.5.13: Alcuin, Deacon & Abbot of Tours, 804

The emperor Charlemagne appointed Alcuin, a Yorkshire nobleman, to revive education among the Franks. A man of vast learning, charm and integrity, he ended up preserving the classical heritage of Western civilization. Under him the liturgy was reformed, Roman missals were edited and adapted, and many prayers we still use today were preserved, including the Collect for Purity. (artist unknown)
