Isabel Hapgood was a well-established journalist who translated Victor Hugo’s “Les Miserables,” as well as Tolstoy, Dostoyevsky and other Russian writers. A lifelong Episcopalian, she fell in love with the Divine Liturgy of the Russian Orthodox Church and received authorization to translate the service into English. She became a force for ecumenical relations between the two Churches. (Granger)
