They called Florence Nightingale “the lady with the lamp” for her heroic service among soldiers in the Crimean War; she looked at the sick wards full of the injured and dying, and promptly ordered they be cleaned up at once. More Tommys were dying of infectious disease and poor sanitation than from war wounds, and she proved it. (Source unknown)
