Juan de la Cruz was a Spanish monk recruited by his friend Teresa of Avila to help reform the Carmelite Order. He devoted himself so fully to the search for God “that he reached the peak of the mystical experience,” according to Holy Women, Holy Men; “a complete transformation in God.” This is a rather bizarre, literalist painting by an unknown artist, with messages shooting like arrows between the Saviour and the saint.
