London-born Sister Anne Ayres moved to New York in 1836, was stirred to action by the sermons of Fr. Muhlenberg, founded the Sisters of the Holy Communion, the first Anglican religious order in North America, and worked with him to found and staff St. Luke’s Hospital, which greatly improved acute care in the city.
