Jeremy Taylor, one of the most influential of the Caroline Divines, was a literary genius and won fame as a writer and preacher long before he became Bishop of Connor and Dromore in Ireland after the Restoration. He was not warmly received and managed to offend everyone who wasn’t Anglican, despite his sincerity, personal warmth and eloquence. Church of Ireland services were held in English, which most of the population didn’t speak or understand, but were forced to attend anyway. It never occurred to him to persuade his priests to learn Irish.
