“Laundry Love” is the name of a new grass-roots movement in ministry, led by Episcopal churches and community groups, especially in California. It works with the owners of self-service laundries to provide free access to washers and dryers for homeless people, along with detergent, friendship and occasional food. 31 August is normally St. Aidan’s Day, but his observance is pre-empted this year by Sunday – which doesn’t prevent us from an informal mention. Aidan was head of a mission from St. Columba’s monastery at Iona in Scotland to northern England, when King Oswald succeeded to the throne in 633 and sought to teach his people about Jesus Christ. St. Bede tells us this gentle monk delighted in distributing wordly gifts from rich people to the poor, and traveled about on foot, inviting the pagans to embrace the mystery of the Christian faith, and strengthening believers to alms and good works.
