Peter Paul Rubens: St. Matthias. The eleven surviving apostles nominated him along with Barnabas, then cast lots – pebbles or sticks tossed from a container, then interpreted as a sign of God’s preference, as described in Acts 1:23. Matthias took his place among the apostles before Pentecost, after which nothing further is definitely known about him. The strongest tradition says he served in Georgia near the Caspian Sea.
