Evening Prayer 19.10.15, 21st Sunday after Pentecost

The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!”

Kenneth D. Taylor has died, the Canadian ambassador to Iran during the American hostage crisis in 1979-81, who famously helped shelter six Americans who escaped the U.S. Embassy and were turned out by the British. Taylor, his wife Pat and the Canadian immigration officer John Sheardown hid the Americans in their homes until they were able to sneak out of the country by posing as members of a Canadian film crew supposedly shooting a science fiction movie. In 2012 the actor-director Ben Affleck made an actual film of the incident, called "Argo," which won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Hailed as a hero in both Canada and the United States, Taylor was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 1981. (Associated Press)

Thus says the high and lofty One who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy, “I dwell in the high and holy place and also with the one who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble and to revive the heart of the contrite.” Isaiah 57:15

INVITATORY AND PSALTER

O God, make speed to save us.
O Lord, make haste to help us.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit:
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen. Alleluia.

Hymn: Light of the World
Phos hilaron

Light of the world in grace and beauty,
Mirror of God’s eternal face,
Transparent flame of love’s free duty,
You bring salvation to our race.
Now, as we see the lights of evening,
We raise our voice in hymns of praise;
Worthy are you of endless blessing,
Sun of our night, lamp of our days.

Psalm 114

1  Hallelujah!
When Israel came out of Egypt, *
the house of Jacob from a people of strange speech,
2  Judah became God’s sanctuary *
and Israel God’s dominion.
3  The sea beheld it and fled; *
Jordan turned and went back.
4  The mountains skipped like rams, *
and the little hills like young sheep.
5  What ailed you, O sea, that you fled? *
O Jordan, that you turned back?
6  You mountains, that you skipped like rams? *
you little hills like young sheep?
7  Tremble, O earth, at the presence of the Lord, *
at the presence of the God of Jacob,
8  Who turned the hard rock into a pool of water, *
and flint-stone into a flowing spring.

Psalm 115

1  Not to us, O LORD, not to us,
but to your Name give glory; *
because of your love and because of your faithfulness.
2  Why should the heathen say, *
“Where then is their God?”
3  Our God is in heaven; *
whatever God wills to do, God does.
4  Their idols are silver and gold, *
the work of human hands.
5  They have mouths, but they cannot speak; *
eyes have they, but they cannot see;
6  They have ears, but they cannot hear; *
noses, but they cannot smell;
7  They have hands, but they cannot feel;
feet, but they cannot walk; *
they make no sound with their throat.
8  Those who make them are like them, *
and so are all who put their trust in them.
9  O Israel, trust in the LORD; *
who is your help and your shield.
10  O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD; *
who is your help and your shield.
11  You who fear the LORD, trust in the LORD; *
who is your help and your shield.
12  The LORD has been mindful of us and will bless us; *
the LORD will bless the house of Israel
and will bless the house of Aaron;
13  The LORD will bless the God-fearing, *
both small and great together.
14  May the LORD increase you more and more, *
you and your children after you.
15  May you be blessed by the LORD, *
the maker of heaven and earth.
16  The heaven of heavens is the LORD’s, *
but the LORD entrusted the earth to its peoples.
17  The dead do not praise the LORD, *
nor all those who go down into silence;
18  But we will bless the LORD, *
from this time forth for evermore.
Hallelujah!

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

THE LESSON
Luke 10:1-12, 17-20 (NRSV)

After this the Lord appointed seventy others and sent them on ahead of him in pairs to every town and place where he himself intended to go. He said to them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; therefore ask the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest. Go on your way. See, I am sending you out like lambs into the midst of wolves. Carry no purse, no bag, no sandals; and greet no one on the road. Whatever house you enter, first say, ‘Peace to this house!’ And if anyone is there who shares in peace, your peace will rest on that person; but if not, it will return to you. Remain in the same house, eating and drinking whatever they provide, for the laborer deserves to be paid. Do not move about from house to house. Whenever you enter a town and its people welcome you, eat what is set before you; cure the sick who are there, and say to them, ‘The kingdom of God has come near to you.’ But whenever you enter a town and they do not welcome you, go out into its streets and say, ‘Even the dust of your town that clings to our feet, we wipe off in protest against you. Yet know this: the kingdom of God has come near.’ I tell you, on that day it will be more tolerable for Sodom than for that town.

The seventy returned with joy, saying, “Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!” He said to them, “I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

Canticle: The Song of Mary
Luke 1:46-55

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
my spirit rejoices in you, O God my Savior, *
for you have looked with favor on your lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed: *
you, the Almighty, have done great things for me,
and holy is your Name.
You have mercy on those who fear you *
from generation to generation.
You have shown strength with your arm, *
and scattered the proud in their conceit,
Casting down the mighty from their thrones, *
and lifting up the lowly.
You have filled the hungry with good things, *
and sent the rich away empty.
You have come to the help of your servant Israel, *
for you have remembered your promise of mercy,
The promise made to our forebears, *
to Abraham and his children for ever.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit: *
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be for ever. Amen.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS

Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your Name,
your kingdom come, your will be done
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us.
Save us from the time of trial
and deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours,
now and for ever. Amen.

Show us your mercy, O Lord;
And grant us your salvation.
Clothe your ministers with righteousness;
Let your people sing with joy.
Give peace, O Lord, in all the world;
For only in you can we live in safety.
Lord, keep this nation under your care;
And guide us in the way of justice and truth.
Let your way be known upon earth;
Your saving health among all nations.
Let not the needy, O Lord, be forgotten;
Nor the hope of the poor be taken away.
Create in us clean hearts, O God;
And sustain us with your Holy Spirit.

Alvin P. Adams has died, the American ambassador to Haiti who paved the way for the democratic election of Fr. Jean-Bertrand Aristide in 1990 after decades of dictatorship. "Papa Doc" Duvalier ruled Haiti with an iron fist and the secret police known as Tontons Macoute; when the old man finally died, his son "Baby Doc" succeeded him, but was driven out 15 years later by a popular uprising. The Haitian military took over, the AIDS epidemic destroyed tourism, and Adams persuaded the military ruler to board a U.S. jet and leave the country. (Frederick Phillips)

The Haitian military took over, the AIDS epidemic destroyed tourism, and Adams, who spoke Haitian Creole, persuaded the military ruler to board a U.S. jet and leave the country. Aristide and his liberation theology didn’t last a year before he was overthrown by a military coup, but more U.S. intervention enabled him to return in 1994, finish out his term and preside over the first transition between democratically elected presidents in Haitian history. Collect of the Day: Proper 24

Almighty and everlasting God, in Christ you have revealed your glory among the nations: Preserve the works of your mercy, that your Church throughout the world may persevere with steadfast faith in the confession of your Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

A Collect for Sundays

Lord God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ triumphed over the powers of death and prepared for us our place in the new Jerusalem: Grant that we, who have this day given thanks for his resurrection, may praise you in that City of which he is the light, and where he lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

Sunday Evening Prayer List

For repentance and conversion
of all who don’t know Christ
of all who disbelieve in God
of all too cynical
of all too scared
of all too burned by Christianity
of all the hypocrites
of all who gossip and exclude
of all who believe but persist in sin
of all who persecute our Lord
of all schismatics
of all the faithful
for the repentance and conversion of all of us

A Collect for Mission

O God and Father of all, whom the whole heavens adore: Let the whole earth also worship you, all nations obey you, all tongues confess and bless you, and men and women everywhere love you and serve you in peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

A Prayer of St. Chrysostom

Almighty God, you have given us grace at this time with one accord to make our common supplications to you; and you have promised through your well-beloved Son that when two or three are gathered together in his Name you will be in the midst of them: Fulfil now, O Lord, our desires and petitions as may be best for us; granting us in this world knowledge of your truth, and in the age to come life everlasting. Amen.

Let us bless the Lord.
Thanks be to God.

Glory to God whose power, working in us, can do infinitely more than we can ask or imagine: Glory to God from generation to generation in the Church, and in Christ Jesus for ever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20-21++
