St. Clement’s By-the-Sea, San Clemente, California, celebrated Our Lady of Guadalupe 2014 with a mariachi band. This native folk music arose in the 18th Century in rural central Mexico, migrated to the cities, took on European influences (waltz, polka), additional instruments and fancier costumes, until in the 1920s it became the national music and, in 2011, a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
