The Abbot Wolfstan became Bishop of Worcester four years before William the Conqueror’s invasion of England, and overcame the new king’s disdain when he professed obedience on canonical grounds to the new Archbishop of Canterbury Lanfranc. So Wulfstan kept his see, lived another 30 years and presided over the transition from an Anglo-Saxon church to an Anglo-French one.
