Australia’s draconian immigration laws continue to be hammered by world public opinion after a report yesterday by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, which concluded after undercover visits to the island of Nauru, where over a thousand refugees are held, that Australia deliberately forces suffering on immigrant prisoners to discourage other boat people from trying to make it. A psychiatrist who used to be the director of mental health services on Nauru said, “The government is pursuing a policy that makes these people human sacrifices to stop more boats from coming.” (Torsten Blackwood/AFP)
