A 19th century Sanctus bell, of the sort acolytes used to ring 50 years ago. Bells, sounded near the start of the Great Thanksgiving of the Eucharist, were said to “wake people up,” especially Roman Catholics nodding off through the Latin, so they’d pay attention to the heart of the Mass; but in time Episcopalians got habituated to hearing it go off, and thought themselves deprived if they didn’t. THE APOSTLES’ CREED

President Obama has designated five new national monuments, including a civil rights district in Birmingham, Alabama centered on the 16th Street Baptist Church, bombed by Ku Klux Klansmen in 1963, killing 4 girls in Sunday school and maiming others. This was supposed to “warn off” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and other justice leaders, but what it did was make the rest of America hate the Klan and all it stood for; the blood of the martyrs is the seed of the Church.
