sanctusbell-19thc

A 19th century Sanctus bell, of the sort I used to ring as an acolyte 50 years ago. Sanctus bells, rung near the start of the Great Thanksgiving of the Eucharist, were said to “wake people up,” especially Roman Catholics, so they’d pay attention to the heart of the Mass; but in time people got habituated to hearing the bell go off, and thought themselves deprived if they didn’t hear it.
