Carmel Mission in Carmel, California, was founded by Fr. Junipero Serra in Monterey, then moved a few years later to the area at the mouth of the Carmel River. It was secularized by the Mexican government, then was returned to the Roman Catholic Church by U.S. President Abraham Lincoln in 1865. Since 1886 it has been a parish church, and is now listed as a National Historic Landmark. (The Rev. Michael Dresbach/Oficio Diario)
