Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryan at the Scopes “monkey trial” in Dayton, Tennessee in 1925. Bryan was a very famous orator and three-time Democratic presidential nominee, when he argued his last big case, prosecuting a high school science teacher who was charged with violating a state law against teaching evolution. Bryan won, but Biblical literalism lost in the court of public opinion, and Bryan died just a few days after the verdict was announced. (Associated Press)
