Macrina was the older sister of four brothers, three of whom became bishops and saints, and we have a good deal of insight into her from the writings of one of them, Gregory of Nyssa. The time he spent with his sister St. Macrina deepened his faith and unleashed his spirit, which came out in his writing. “On the Making of Man” takes delight in creation, and his “Commentary on the Song of Songs” is a celebration of earthly love. Nyssa was a town in Cappodocia in south central Turkey.
