Julia Chester Emery was the longtime president of the Women’s Auxiliary of The Episcopal Church in the days when women were entirely excluded from church governance; they couldn’t even serve on a parish vestry until the 1960s. But with this one little tool (“Drop in a coin for everything you’re thankful for”) she developed a ministry that dwarfed any man’s. In a little over a century today’s Episcopal Church Women have raised hundreds of millions of dollars – and they give it out themselves, without asking permission from titled men.
