American Samoa (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration)

U.S. ownership of these islands was a direct result of colonialist competition among the U.S., Britain and Germany in the South Pacific, which was in turn part of a much bigger battle among European nations to carve up Africa in the 19th century.

  1. Interesting fact about American Samoa is that it is about 2,300 miles south and west of Kiribati. Why is this interesting? Well, Kiribati is 25 hours ahead of American Samoa. Noon today in American Samoa would be 1pm tomorrow in Kiribati. (Hawai’i is almost 2,000 miles north of Kiribati and only 24 hours behind.) Imagine ringing in the New Year on Kiribati, then flying to American Samoa to ring it in all over again.
