The Temple Mount is known today as Mount Zion, but it never was a mountain, and the hill designated as Mt. Zion – on the east side of Jerusalem, the Old City of David – was gradually supplanted by this western hill, which is taller. “Mount Zion” is now a generalized name for the city itself, and for all Israel.
