StClement Martyrdom of.BernardinoFungai

Bernardino Fungai, 15th C.: Martyrdom of St. Clement. Legend says he was tossed off a boat with an anchor around his neck. The Early Church’s most pre-eminent historians make no mention of any martyrdom, as they surely would have done for the first pope to exercise hierarchical authority when he successfully disciplined the church in Corinth, hundreds of miles away. But the anchor image persists, and churches by the sea are often named for him.
