Julia Chester Emery was the longtime secretary of the Episcopal Church Women in an era when females were denied any formal role in church governance; they couldn’t even serve on a parish vestry. But she took the old Women’s Auxiliary and turned it into a powerful ministry, thanks to the fundraising prowess of the little blue boxes known as the United Thank Offering: put a coin in the box every time you’re thankful for something or someone, and together our coins will add up to… tens of millions of dollars in ministry grants the world over.
