Laurel Wreath.Villa Hurmuses

The use of laurel wreaths to crown winning athletes is very ancient, traced back to a story about the Greek god Apollo, who wanted a goddess named Daphne who wasn’t interested in him; she turned herself into a laurel tree instead, and amidst his grief-stricken ardor, he cut off a branch to remember her by. Cooks know laurel as the bay leaf, used to flavor stews. (Villa Hurmuses)
