Lizzie Wright, born in Georgia in 1872, relentlessly pursued higher education for herself and other African-Americans. She attended Booker T. Washington’s Tuskegee Institute, then set off to South Carolina to found her own schools, which white arsonists burned down. She moved to friendlier territory in Denmark, S.C. and, with two colleagues, founded Voorhees College, which is still affiliated with The Episcopal Church today.
