Chad, a humble monk and abbot, was consecrated Bishop of York, England in a chaotic period during a time of plague, but when a new Archbishop came, he objected to the procedure used to ordain him, so Chad resigned. The archbishop, evidently expecting trouble, was pleased by his submission and appointed him Bishop of Lichfield, where Chad built a new monastery and ministered to his flock on foot.
