U.S. Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens has died, a moderate-conservative Republican who unexpectedly became the leader of the Court’s progressive wing. He served for 35 years and retired in 2010 at age 90. He’s best known for his dissent in the court case, Bush v. Gore, which halted a recount and declared George W. Bush the winner. Stevens wrote that the actual winner might never known, but the loser was clear: “the nation’s confidence in the judge as an impartial guardian of the rule of law.” (AP)
