Pope Francis was in Madagascar Saturday and appealed to stop exploiting the island’s unique natural resources, leaving the residents in abject poverty. “The deterioration of that biodiversity compromises the future of the country and of the earth, our common home,” the Pope warned. Many people engage in poaching plants and animals to survive; a few multimillionaire “rosewood barons” plunder the island’s northeastern forests with the help of corrupt public officials. Huge percentages of Madagascar’s plants and animals are found nowhere else in the world, and international demand must end. (Alessandra Tarantino/AP)
