Dalai Lama Performs Rite 2017.Tenzin Choejor AP

The Dalai Lama is now 84 years old, and whenever questions arise about his longevity and succession, the Chinese government tries to assert its power to name the 15th leader of Tibetan Buddhism. Last week, 150 Tibetan religious leaders said the current Dalai Lama should name his own successor, rekindling the running feud. The Tibetan people, they said, will never accept anyone chosen by Beijing. Meanwhile Thomas Becket reminds us that even if the king gets to name the archbishop, the king might not get what he wants – and getting rid of him could turn out ten times worse.
