Shattuck-St. Mary’s School is a Church-related boarding school in Faribault, Minnesota founded as a school and seminary by the missionary priest James Lloyd Breck in 1858, and reorganized by the first Bishop of Minnesota Henry Whipple in 1860. It was the scene this weekend of a retreat for transitional deacons in the diocese, including our own Tom Roy, prior to their ordination as priests.

and for those who feel secure on Mount Samaria,

and calves from the stall;
who sing idle songs to the sound of the harp,
and like David improvise on instruments of music;
who drink wine from bowls,
and anoint themselves with the finest oils,
but are not grieved over the ruin of Joseph!
Therefore they shall now be the first to go into exile,
and the revelry of the loungers shall pass away.
The Lord GOD has sworn by himself

I abhor the pride of Jacob
and hate his strongholds;
and I will deliver up the city and all that is in it.
If ten people remain in one house, they shall die. 2 Thessalonians 1:5-12 (NRSV)
This is evidence of the righteous judgment of God, and is intended to make you worthy of the kingdom of God, for which you are also suffering. For it is indeed just of God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, and to give relief to the afflicted as well as to us, when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven with his mighty angels in flaming fire, inflicting vengeance on those who do not know God and on those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. These will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might, when he comes to be glorified by his saints and to be marveled at on that day among all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.

THE APOSTLES’ CREED
I believe in God,
the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.

Collect of the Day: Second Sunday of Advent
Merciful God, who sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation: Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
A Collect for Sundays
O God, you make us glad with the weekly remembrance of the glorious resurrection of your Son our Lord: Give us this day such blessing through our worship of you, that the week to come may be spent in your favor; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
