The U.S. government is unveiling new visa restrictions in an effort to curb “birth tourism,” in which pregnant women go to the U.S. to give birth and obtain a U.S. passport for their baby. One estimate says about 35,000 women a year, mostly from China and Russia, are estimated to engage in this per year. It is unpopular among conservatives and the government has tried to curb it before the current administration began – but U.S. companies are allowed to sell pricy, all-inclusive travel packages, and some women are open about why they go, arriving with signed contracts for hospital, doctors and hotel. From now on, the government says, they’ll be treated like any other person seeking a visa for medical care. An AP analysis questions how effective the new regulations will be. (Front Page Africa)
