House Repeals ERA Deadline Rep Jackie Speier D-CA.Scott Applewhite AP

The U.S. House of Representatives has repealed the deadline to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment, which would prohibit discrimination based on gender. This follows Virginia’s recent ratification a few days ago, becoming the 38th and last state needed to adopt the amendment – at least theoretically, because there is no precedent for a 50-year ratification process, starting in the 1970s. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, a lifelong feminist, said in a recent speech that proponents will have to do the hard work of starting over; their magic number of 38 states includes several which later repealed their ratification; supporters can’t count the yesses without the nos.
