The first LGBTQ+ Pride March was held in 1970, the year after Stonewall, with Jim Fouratt of the Gay Liberation Front stepping off as the march’s drum major. Throughout the first decade the theme was political protest, as well as pride, but by the end of the decade the celebratory parade took center stage. (Michael Evans/The New York Times)
