NY Phil Bandwagon in Flushing Queens 10.2.20 popups all weekend Mary Altaffer AP

Members of the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, one of America’s most prestigious, have been out of work since March, but for the past several weekends a few members and guest artists have descended unannounced on city neighborhoods for popup concerts. They call themselves the NY Phil Bandwagon (though it’s really a red pickup) and they pull up at unlikely street corners in the city’s five boroughs; above, in Flushing, Queens. The last popup concerts of autumn will be held this weekend at surprise locations; musicians say they’re tired of playing concertos over the phone for their friends and want to make music for other people again.
