Maryam, also known as St. Mary of Egypt, was an orphan raised by her uncle Abraham, a desert hermit. She lived a holy life until she was seduced by one of her uncle’s frequent visitors. Afterward she was so overcome by guilt that she became a prostitute in Edessa, until her uncle dressed up in a disguise and went looking for her. She recognized him at last, he took her home and explained that her sin would make her a better spiritual counselor to other sinners than she had ever been as a virgin. (Orthodox Path)
