The Elf on the Shelf was scheduled to appear at the annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade later today, but without his usual 60 handlers on the ground; instead he and all the other balloons will be tethered to specially equipped trucks as the parade goes virtual, while spectators watch taped segments at home. The parade route this year is limited to a single block in front of Macy’s flagship department store in New York City. Radio City’s Rockettes dancers will be featured, but they can’t do their famous kickline while social distancing. Marching bands and other drill teams were all from the Tri-State area to minimize travel, and though Broadway has been dark since March, the casts of four musicals were reassembled for taping, glad to be performing together again – and glad they’ll get to watch it from home instead of freezing for hours outdoors like they do all other years.
