Every culture has its harvest festival; in America it’s called Thanksgiving Day, which is both a civic holiday and a major feast day in The Episcopal Church. Many of us feel we have less to be thankful for this year than any other time in memory; millions of family gatherings have been curtailed or canceled, even as others risk driving or flying to be with family and friends. In this year of impeachment, uncontrolled pandemic, economic collapse, peaceful street protests along with riots and looting, followed by a bitter election and absurd uproar over the transfer of power, what is there to be thankful for? Meet Kakkinen, born 2 November, the second grandson of Jerry, one of our beloved webcasters. This little tyke is a forerunner for another child we’re expecting a month from today – so yes, we do give thanks for life and love and blessings. Thanks be to God!

Deuteronomy 26:1-11 (NRSV)
When you have come into the land that the LORD your God is giving you as an inheritance to possess, and you possess it, and settle in it, you shall take some of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which you harvest from the land that the LORD your God is giving you, and you shall put it in a basket and go to the place that the LORD your God will choose as a dwelling for his name. You shall go to the priest who is in office at that time, and say to him, “Today I declare to the LORD your God that I have come into the land that the LORD swore to our ancestors to give us.” When the priest takes the basket from your hand and sets it down before the altar of the LORD your God, you shall make this response before the LORD your God: “A wandering Aramean was my ancestor; he went down into Egypt and lived there as an alien, few in number, and there he became a great nation, mighty and populous. When the Egyptians treated us harshly and afflicted us, by imposing hard labor on us, we cried to the LORD, the God of our ancestors; the LORD heard our voice and saw our affliction, our toil, and our oppression. A Prayer for Anti-Violence Activists

O Lord, we continue to lose 900 people to gun violence every week; we struggle to keep hope alive and people too, in the face of entrenched opposition in our political system. We pray you will show us how to support activists and legislators who work every day to free us from the scourge of gun violence. We ask your blessing on organizations like Mothers United, Bishops United, the Gifford Project and Everytown for Gun Safety; help us to reform our political system to enact the people’s will to restrict access to handguns and assault rifles. Your Son our Savior came to save us from death and to bring us to life; help us to follow his example, Lord, in the face of violence aimed at all of us by the enemy. Amen.
