Broadway producer, director and actor Douglas Turner Ward has died, the founder of the Negro Ensemble Theater, which brought together Black artists in high-quality off-Broadway productions that had a wide impact on American theater. Necessity was the mother of invention; there was no work for Black playwrights and actors in 1967, so he created his own venue with a grant from the Ford Foundation.
