Quinn Chapel A.M.E. in Chicago has a rare fresco of Black Jesus, with his mother Mary and various Black angels. Frederick Douglass preached there shortly after the church was built in 1892, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. spoke there in the 1960s, but the building has water and roof damage, endangering the fresco. The congregation has applied for a Federal grant as a national historic site. The fresco was painted by a self-taught parishioner named Proctere Chisholm, who modeled several of the figures on children in the congregation. (Pat Nabong/Chicago Sun-Times)
