Apache Stronghold vs Copper Mine Phoenix US Court.3.2.21 Cheyanne Mumphrey AP

A group of indigenous Apaches is trying to stop a giant copper mine from being built on sacred lands, known in English as Oak Flat; they demonstrated yesterday at the Federal Courthouse in Phoenix, Arizona. The deal would trade 3.75 square miles of National Forest land for several small parcels owned by the mining company. Congress has to approve land swaps, and did so in 2014 as part of a giant, must-pass military spending bill; as a stand-alone bill. the swap was never popular. The Biden administration has now hit the brakes on the deal temporarily while the court case proceeds. The site contains oak groves and native plants and animals, which Apache Stronghold says are essential to its Native religion. (Cheyanne Mumphrey/AP)
